Prince William rejects climate change denial and says science is 'irrefutable'

Prince William has said science on climate change is “irrefutable” as he calls for positive action to solve the problems facing the planet.

William, 38, is to appear on climate change podcast Outrage and Optimism as he sets out his plans for his Earthshot Prize, which has the ambitious goal of repairing the planet.

He joined hosts Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac and Paul Dickinson, for an episode of the podcast which is due out on Friday.

The father-of-three said: “The science is out there and is irrefutable. We have the data. So let’s stop talking about it and let’s actually provide the action.

“I think that’s what’s going to be really needed over these next 10 years.”

The Duke of Cambridge launched his Nobel-style Earthshot prize earlier this month, which will see £50m awarded over the course of 10 years to different projects which are tackling issues like cleaning the air, the oceans and building a waste-free world.

Nominations for the prize open on 1 November and anyone could win, from individuals to countries.

Figueres is the former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and she oversaw the delivery of the Paris Agreement, widely agreed to be the landmark agreement on tackling climate change.

Figueres is also joining William on the Earthshot Prize council, helping to choose the winners of the £1m funds each year.

She said: “I have been inspired by Prince William’s recognition and foresight in using his platform for the good of humanity in this way.

“The Earthshot Prize will not only deliver important innovations to make progress on the most pressing issues of our time, but it will inspire a generation so that many more change-makers will no doubt emerge.

“Tackling climate change is not a far-off challenge – we have the technologies, tools and resources to achieve a halving of emissions this decade, as science shows is necessary.”

Co-host Rivett-Carnanc is a political lobbyist who worked on the Paris Agreement and founded Global Optimism with Figueres.

The organisation tries to turn pessimism about the climate crisis to optimism with ideas and solutions to make progress.

Dickinson is the founder of the Carbon Disclosure Project, which works to “focus investors, companies and cities on taking action to build a truly sustainable economy by measuring and understanding their environmental impact” according to its website.
