Plumbing contractor reportedly caused DC's 911 outage

Washington D.C. 's 911 system stopped working for more than an hour after a plumbing contractor struck an all-stop emergency shutoff button, officials told NBC Washington on Monday.

The system went down Saturday night for about 90 minutes. The problems started after 11 p.m. and service was restored by about 1 a.m. Sunday, the report said. The contractor was searching for "a plumbing leak that threatened highly sensitive equipment," according to NBC Washington.

D.C. emergency officials said they plan to further restrict access to the button by adding more security and signage.
