OrangeTee distributes over 1000 care packs to elderly and underprivileged amid Covid-19 outbreak

OrangeTee is stepping up its efforts to support the elderly and the vulnerable during the current Covid-19 outbreak.

During the March 28 weekend, 60 volunteers from OrangeTee spent two days packing and distributing more than 1000 care packs to the occupants at blocks 5,15, 31 170 in Toa Payoh, which comprise of one bedroom units and rental flats.

The #CareForCommunity event, distributed care packs containing some basic necessities – including a 1kg pack of rice, hand sanitiser, hand soap and bar soap. To maintain social distancing, the team of volunteers wore masks throughout the event, and were divided into two teams, each distributing to two blocks to avoid intermingling.

The items were well received by the recipients, even though some of them were unsure how to use them. Mr Chan, 79, had to ask the volunteers how to use the hand sanitizer, before inviting the volunteers to stay on for a chat.

“It was nice to be able to see the old folks again, but it was disappointing that we could not stay for long this time,” said Doris Sim, a property agent and a repeat volunteer.

Another volunteer, Vaani, brought her son along for the distribution as part of his birthday celebration. “We couldn’t do any birthday celebration for him this year, so we decided to come here and do something meaningful for the public, and create a memorable experience for him,” she said.

“At times like these, when many people are feeling helpless faced with the unknowns from the Covid-19 outbreak, it becomes even more pertinent for us to look out for one another, especially those from the low-income bracket, those who are vulnerable, and those who need more help,” said Simon Yio, Executive Director of OrangeTee & Tie who is the main organiser of the event. “That’s why we are doing what we can to help them.”

The CareForCommunity event is part of OrangeTee’s move towards sustainability in 2020. “At Orangetee, we are embracing sustainability as part of our business. This has driven us to set aside our resources and time to do the things that matter most, doing things beyond our regular day-today business,” said Steven Tan, MD, OrangeTee & Tie. “I’m very happy that we managed to put this together, and I hope this event will encourage our elderly and vulnerable folks to stay home amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
