Following her breakout turn in this year's Normal People, Daisy Edgar-Jones has won the lead role in new film Where the Crawdads Sing.

First Match's Olivia Newman will call the shots on this one as director, while Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lucy Alibar (Beasts of the Southern Wild) adapts Delia Owens' original novel (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Where the Crawdads Sing centres on a young woman named Kya, who's abandoned by her family and left to raise herself on a North Carolina marsh.

Kya makes something of her life, though, becoming a respected author by writing books on local flora and fauna. Then things start to get crazy when she's accused of killing her ex-boyfriend – the local town's golden boy.

Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter's production house Hello Sunshine is working on the film, which will be released by Sony Pictures.

It's nice to see Daisy deservedly getting a shot in Hollywood alongside her Normal People co-star Paul Mescal, who was cast in Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut back in August.

Titled The Lost Daughter, Mescal is in fine company next to Olivia Colman (The Crown), Jessie Buckley (I'm Thinking of Ending Things), Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman) and Dakota Johnson (Bad Times at the El Royale).
