National Gallery Singapore opens its doors this month

Southeast Asian art will be in the focus as the National Gallery Singapore opens to the public on November 24, with the goal of becoming a key cultural institution for the region.

The 64,000-square-meter gallery will house one of the region's largest public displays from the 19th century to the present day.

Earlier this month, plans were revealed for more than 20 free events and activities as part of the opening celebrations, which runs from November 24 through December 6, when free admission will allow all to discover the gallery.

Starting November 27, an opening festival, "Share the Hope," will feature an Art Carnival at the Padang field; at night, visual projections on the Gallery's façade will take inspiration from its collection of 19th- and 20-century art.

Also happening around the launch will be the world premiere of Southeast Asian short films featuring the art in the gallery's exhibitions, held in conjunction with the concurrent 26th Singapore International Film Festival.

Those visiting the gallery in its early days will see opening exhibitions including "Wu Guanzhong: Beauty Beyond Form," which starts on November 26 and features 80 artworks, including 22 on loan from five major Chinese museums, covering the prolific career of the Chinese artist and tracking the evolution of his style over five decades.

Putting Singaporean art in the spotlight will be "Siapa Nama Kamu?" (What is Your Name?" in Malay), displaying 400 iconic works from the 19th century and beyond and examining Singapore's identity and its links to Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. That exhibition will be located in the DBS Singapore Gallery, opening November 24.

Visitors to the gallery will have the chance to try out the new Gallery Explorer app, which, using Bluetooth-enabled beacon technology, presents relevant content about an artwork when the visitor is in its proximity.

Further ahead, the institution has plans to collaborate with international institutions on its series of exhibitions, beginning with Paris's Centre Pompidou. In the second quarter of 2016, the two museums will present a co-curated exhibition about reframing modernism, examining the relationship between art of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Future exhibition partners will include institutions in Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan and the Netherlands.
