Mr SR Nathan, former President and nation builder, dies at 92

Former President of Singapore, Mr S.R. Nathan, passed away peacefully on the night of 22 August 2016.

He might not have been a real estate man, or a city planner, but he too was a builder of Singapore.

Mr Nathan devoted his life to public service. His work in the labour movement helped ensure that working class men and women had the support they needed to put a roof over the heads of their families. As a member of Singapore’s intelligence service, he, together with countless others, have made sure that Singaporeans can take a safe return home every day for granted.

As President, he gave his approval twice to unlock the reserves and stabilised the economy, while his charitable endeavours have raised over $150 million for those in need.

As a person who thought he would spend his life as a hawker’s assistant, but went on to hold the highest office of our land, he teaches us that it is not our beginnings that matter, but our destination and the good work that we do along the way.

Mr Nathan spent a lifetime in public service, and we are grateful for his lifetime of contributions towards building Singapore.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, son and three grandchildren.

From the team at PropertyGuru, we offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
