Most expensive city for public transportation: Oslo

The capital of Norway has emerged the most expensive city in the world for taking public transportation, as the cost of a single ticket will set commuters back more than $5.

After crunching the numbers around the world, analysts at Statista compiled a chart showing that public transportation in Scandinavian and Nordic countries is ‘scandalously’ expensive.

Dominating the list are cities such as Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki.

Switzerland, meanwhile, has the dubious distinction of boasting two of the most expensive transport systems in the world in Zurich and Geneva.

The results come as little surprise given that many of the cities listed are also among the most expensive cities in the world for living.

Oslo consistently tops rankings for the priciest cities. A single ride on the bus, tram, metro, train or ferry in the Norwegian city costs $5.12 USD.

Prices are based on figures for February 2015.

1. Oslo, Norway, $5.12
2. Copenhagen, Denmark, $4.88
3. Zurich, Switzerland, $4.66
4. Stockholm, Sweden, $4.52
5. London, England, $3.70
6. Geneva, Switzerland, $3.67
