Melania Trump takes a sartorial step up after departing the White House

President Biden might have only been inaugurated on Wednesday, but it seems the Trumps are doing everything in their power to let people know they aren’t going quietly.

While Donald Trump may choose to express himself through language - and previously through Twitter - his wife, Melania, does so through clothing. At least, that’s what her most recent ensembles suggest.

On Wednesday, just a few hours before Biden was sworn in to replace her husband as president of the United States, Melania was photographed leaving the White House in one of her slickest and most expensive looks to date.

For her final outing as First Lady, Melania wore a black cropped Chanel coat with a row of gold buttons, which she paired with a black pencil skirt, black Christian Louboutin stilettos, gloves and geometric black sunglasses.

Wearing a somber all-black outfit for the occasion was already a bold move, but it was Melania’s accessory that took her look up a notch.

It was, of course, none other than a black Hermès Birkin bag, which comes with a price tag of £50,000.

That would have been enough of a fashion punch, but Melania upped her sartorial game once again when she was photographed stepping off the plane in Florida fresh from Washington DC in a geometric Gucci dress.

The maxi summer dress is covered in a hexagonal print and features splashes of vivid tangerine and navy blue. It is currently retailing at $3,700 (£2,707).

Melania paired the dress with some flat navy pointed pumps.

Both looks earned the former first lady swathes of praise on social media, with many people delighting in the contrast between the two outfits.

“Can we talk about @FLOTUS45 @MELANIATRUMP having two exquisite outfits today, both fitting the time and location. That’s the kind of extra I strive to be,” one person tweeted.

Another added that Melania “was serving up some true fashion today like she was on the runway”.

However, not everyone was quite so taken with Melania’s fashion choices, with one person describing the pattern on her Gucci dress as being reminiscent of “1960s wallpaper”.
