Meghan Markle has taught us many lessons over the years, but her New Year’s resolution message might be among the very cutest.

In an unarchived 2016 post from her now defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about the several resolutions that make her list every year.

‘Run a marathon. Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French,’ she wrote in the post.

‘The marathon hasn’t happened. The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple drinks. Then there’s the French – a language I studied through high school and then lost as I immersed myself in speaking Spanish with the Argentinians during my stint in Buenos Aires,' she continued.

As for the nail biting, Markle revealed that it ‘still happens with a turbulent flight or a stressful day’. ‘It’s unladylike. But then again, so is the swearing. Dammit.’

In the post the now mother-of-two questioned the point of New Years’ resolutions, explaining that she often finds herself ‘wallowing in disappointment’ when she doesn’t achieve her goals.

‘This year I resolve to not have a resolution,’ she wrote, noting that if it takes a couple more years to learn French ‘that’s cool’.

‘My nails will be fine, and if I toss out a four letter word once in a blue moon, well frankly I think it adds character,’ she continued.

Instead, for 2016 Markle aimed to ‘approach life playfully’. ‘To laugh and enjoy, to keep my standards high but my level of self-acceptance higher.’

Recalling a memory involving her telling her friend and former Suits co-star Gina Torres about her New Years plans, the Duchess noted: ‘She stopped me. "Meg, I will just say one thing. Make sure you leave room for magic".'

As a result, Markle added that her resolution for the year to ‘leave room for magic’.

'To make my plans, and be okay if they sometimes break. To set my goals, but to be open to change. To let the magic know that there is an open door policy with me in 2016 and that it is always welcome to join the party,' she added.

Markle closed down her blog in April 2017 as her relationship with the Duke of Sussex intensified.

The post was written almost a year before she and Prince Harry announced their engagement to the world. The couple married a year later, on May 19, 2018 and have since welcomed two children: Archie, two, and Lilibet, five-months.

This festive season the family-of-four are likely to stay at their Montecito, California home, which marks the foursome’s second Christmas away from Prince Harry’s immediate family in the UK.

It’s widely been reported that the Queen plans to host a royal family Christmas on December 25 at Sandringham following a couple of weeks of ill health. The Christmas will be her first without her husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April.
