Man Utd on verge of signing after breezing past Chelsea with ‘breakthrough’ in negotiations
Manchester United look set to have won the race for a highly rated defender after entering ‘advanced talks’ with his current club, according to a report.
Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag can already utilise a strong back four, with Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot the usual starters. The likes of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Tyrell Malacia are also in the Man Utd squad.
Ten Hag wants to make a few changes to the defence this summer, with two main targets in mind. He wants a new centre-half to arrive at Old Trafford and due to this the Red Devils have recently begun talks over Axel Disasi’s potential signing from Monaco.
Ten Hag is also hopeful of replacing Wan-Bissaka with a new, more attacking right-back. Denzel Dumfries is one player who could be pursued by Man Utd.
While the captures of Disasi and Dumfries would help to immediately improve the first team, Ten Hag is also keen to ensure the long-term future of the squad looks bright.
And with this in mind, Man Utd are close to signing a talented young defender from Watford. As per the Evening Standard, Man Utd are in ‘advanced talks’ with the Championship club over Harry Amass’ move to Manchester. That comes after a recent ‘breakthrough’ in discussions.
Amass, 16, is described by the report as an ‘attacking full-back’, who represents England at U16 level and has impressed major clubs for some time now.
Chelsea have tried to sign him, with chairman Todd Boehly looking to hoover up some of the best young players in the UK. But Chelsea have now admitted defeat to Man Utd as Ten Hag’s side are preparing to complete a deal.
Youngster gets dream Man Utd switch
Amass made a senior Watford squad when he was just 15 years old. Despite this, he believes it would be better for him if he trained in a top academy, and he has decided on Man Utd as his favoured destination.
The report does not reveal how much Man Utd will pay in compensation to Watford. But club chiefs at Old Trafford will be delighted to sign someone who is making a big impression in the England youth setup, having helped the Young Lions to win silverware at the UEFA Development tournament in February.
Meanwhile, a report claims Man Utd have made a Premier League star their number one midfield target for the summer.
