In the spring, we watched a man use Google Cardboard to help pop the question. Then, earlier this week, we heard about the guy who created a video game to ask his girlfriend to marry him.
Now presenting: The first known virtual reality marriage proposal!
An employee at video game company Valve proposed to his girlfriend while giving her a demo with the HTC Vive VR headset, according to a public Facebook post first spotted by Ars Technica.
The Vive headset, which creates a form of “room-scale” VR that lets users walk around their virtual environment, isn’t on sale yet, but because Valve makes the visuals for it, employee Chandler Murch snagged one to surprise his girlfriend.
“So there I was, typical day… on a sunken ship deck; fixing robots; painting three-dimensional fire; walking through the Alps; and then suddenly, a virtual engagement ring started floating my way,” Kelly Tortorice writes on Facebook. “Chandler told me to grab it. Then told me to take off my headset, and there he really was, on one knee, with a real ring. It wasn’t imaginary anymore. But I didn’t say yes. I said, “OF COURSE I WILL MARRY YOU!” Thank you for such a hilarious and fun surprise. I love you and I can’t wait for the life ahead of us.”
It’s an undeniably cute story, and may act as inspiration for other VR-lovers moving forward.
Thought they’ll have to wait a bit: The Vive headset will supposedly launch by the end of this year while its competitor, the Oculus Rift, starts shipping in early 2016.
