Major facelift planned for Civic District

By Romesh Navaratnarajah: In a bid to transform Singapore's Civic District into a world-class arts and cultural hub, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will engage consultants to help revitalise the district's appeal by enhancing pedestrian connectivity and creating public spaces.

To be completed by 2015, the project aims to revamp public buildings including Victoria Concert Hall, Victoria Theatre and The National Art Gallery.

Part of the plan is also to enhance connectivity to adjacent precincts such as Bras Basah, Bugis and Fort Canning Park as well as the nearby City Hall MRT station and Marina Bay waterfront.

The public will also enjoy more green spaces like open plazas and parks, which could hold community activities and other cultural events.

"Such spaces not only enhance and enrich community life, but add more vibrancy to our city. We are also inviting ideas to enhance the open spaces in Empress Place and Esplanade Park to boost the overall attraction of the precinct as an arts and cultural destination," said the URA.

The agency is inviting both local and international firms to submit their proposals by 31 January 2013.
