Often, when the areas of concentration of two companies overlap, they battle it out for market dominance, so it’s nice when we see an example of people companies working together to benefit users. Instead of classifying Carousell as its competitor, Singapore Press Holdings’ STClassifieds has joined forces with the lifestyle marketplace app startup to create a better mobile experience for users. Now Carousell users will be able to reach out to the wider audience provided by the STClassifieds platform (pictured top), which increases their chances of selling their brand-new or secondhand goods. This announcement validates the direction that the Carousell team has set for themselves. The Singapore-based startup hopes to make its service really simple, convenient, and easy to use. Co-founder Quek Siu Rui tells us more:

This partnership brings us closer to our vision of being the simplest [way] to sell anything. [It helps] our users' items reach [a large pool of audience] with the least amount of time and effort. So in 30 seconds, you can create a listing which Carousell will then broadcast to as many prospective buyers on various relevant platforms. STClassifieds is one of them.

Now users of STClassifieds are able to exploit the various built-in photo filters by Carousell to enhance their photos prior to uploading them. This makes the items seem more attractive, thus increasing the chances of them of getting sold. Talks on the partnership begun three months ago, when the m-commerce startup was introduced to the STClassifieds team at a crafts fair. The idea of collaborating only came about in the past month. On the collaboration, Steven Wong, director of marketing and business development of SPH Online Classifieds (ST701) adds:

[STClassifieds] aims to engage users with convenient features that optimize users’ buying and selling. This joint partnership with Carousell allows us to reach out beyond our users and strengthen our foothold with the mobile-savvy young generation.”

The more popular categories on Carousell include for her(which mainly contains ladies’ fashion and beauty products), lifestyle gadgets, and design & craft. These top three categories represent 80 percent of the total listings on Carousell. At present, the three-man team is also looking to raise funds in the upcoming months to support its expansion into neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. It has also recently released an Android version. With Chinese New Year around the corner, perhaps Carousell could be a good way to give a new life to your old items. For iOS users, you can download the app here.
