Lupin part one spoilers follow.

What should have been a fun-filled day at the beach for Assane, his ex-partner Claire and their son spiralled into a nightmare when Raoul was kidnapped.

While Assane was preoccupied with proving to the mother of their child that he was committed to her and Raoul, the teenager was being bundled into a car by Leonard, one of Hubert Pellegrini's henchmen.

Pellegrini had instructed him not to harm Assane's family, but with Leonard's initial efforts to put a stop to him thwarted, his stooge deduced that abducting the gentleman burglar's son was the most effective course of action.

But that wasn't the only problem that the protagonist was forced to confront.

Youssef, the detective who had made the connection between Assane and Arsène Lupin, (with zero assistance from his colleagues, we should add) had tracked him down.

Assane's greatest strength has always been cutting himself loose from sticky situations, such as when he escaped from prison by miraculously faking his own death.

But Youssef is both intelligent and tenacious, refusing to be thrown off the scent regardless of the challenges thrown his way.

All signs are pointing towards the two of them teaming up to bring Pellegrini to justice, in turn exonerating Assane's father Babakar.

All his life, Assane had been led to believe that his dad was a thief.

Babakar had supposedly stolen the legendary queen's necklace from a safe in the Pellegrini house while working as a chauffeur for the family. It was then believed to have been dismantled, with the seven gemstones scattered to the four corners of the world.

But Pellegrini allegedly succeeded in tracking them all down and the piece of jewellery was reassembled.

Babakar had initially denied the accusation, but he later claimed responsibility and was thrown in jail, where he seemingly took his own life.

But that story was completely turned on its head.

After Assane stole the necklace during an auction at the Lourve, his best friend Benjamin, an antiques collector and restorer, discovered that it hadn't been taken apart. Instead, the narrative had been fabricated for the benefit of Pellegrini's pocket.

Pellegrini's daughter Juliette confirmed as much, telling Assane, who she had once been romantically involved with, that the pair had lied in order to create buzz around the antique before it went to auction.

And there's also the matter of Babakar's death.

We learned that Babakar had signed the confession after Pellegrini had his wife Anne convince him to. By doing so, Babakar was led to believe that his time behind bars would be reduced.

But with the necklace still missing, his sentenced remained unchanged – a key piece of information that purposefully wasn't communicated to the innocent man.

It was there, in his concrete cell, that Babakar died, not by his own hand, but that of another.

In episode one, there's a flashback in which a young Assane goes to visit his father in prison and shortly before he's found dead, a man who bears a strong resemblance to Leonard popped up briefly, flashing him an unsettling smile before being dragged away by a prison guard.

Destroying Pellegrini is now going to prove significantly trickier given that he knows Assane is the man plotting against him. But if our prediction proves correct and Youssef decides to cooperate, they have a fighting chance.

The duo would make a formidable force with their shared, in-depth knowledge of Maurice Leblanc's Lupin stories.

Netflix hasn't announced when part two will premiere, but as soon as we know, you'll be the first to hear.
