Johnny Depp has been given a special acting award weeks after losing his libel battle over a Sun article claiming he was a "wife beater".

The actor had sued the tabloid's publisher, News Group Newspapers (NGN), and its executive editor Dan Wootton over a 2018 article in which it was alleged he was violent to ex-wife Amber Heard during their relationship.

Days after the ruling, Depp was asked to resign from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, in which he played Grindelwald.

This award was given to the Pirates of the Caribbean star as part of the Cameraimage festival in Poland.

While accepting it in the Bahamas, he was pictured smiling away holding his trophy.

Bizarrely, the photo shows the actor behind bars.

Depp's new film, Minamata, closed the virtual event on Saturday (21 November).

It premiered immediately after he was given the trophy for Actor with Unique Visual Sensitivity.

Depp was pictured smiling away while holding his award in the Bahamas, but bizarrely, the photo shows the actor behind bars.

He wrote the event's organisers a letter in which he praised the cinematographers he has worked with throughout his career.

He wrote: “I have always been someone who needs to not know what is coming next. To capture those unrehearsed moments – those moments of beautiful mistake – those same moments that make cinema, and life, magic.”

Depp said he was "honoured and humbled" to receive the award.

It is unknown who will replace Depp in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, although reports claim Warner Bros is considering Mads Mikkelsen.

His co-star, Jude Law, described the experience of Depp being axed from the Harry Potter spinoff series as “unusual”.
