A car-lite sports and community hub will soon rise on a 12ha site next to Sembawang MRT station.

Led by Sport Singapore, the hub called Bukit Canberra will feature the second Town Sports and Recreation Centre under the Sports Facilities Master Plan, after Heartbeat @ Bedok, reported The New Paper.

The $1.5 billion project will open progressively from 2020, with Phase 1 expected to be fully operational by 2021.

Facilities at Bukit Canberra will include a 500-seater indoor sports hall, an eight-lane lap pool, a six-lane sheltered swimming pool and a 1,500 sq m ActiveSG gym – the biggest yet catering to people of all abilities.

“Finally, the project that some residents have been waiting a long time for is here,” said Education Minister Ong Ye Kung at the hub’s groundbreaking ceremony held on Sunday (1 July).

He was joined by other MPs including Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Health Amrin Amin, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, and about 800 residents.

To give residents more opportunities to relax and mingle with one another, the hub will also bring together various services and features.

For instance, there will be 3km of running trails of varying difficulties, as well as a number of healthcare options, such as a polyclinic and senior care centre offering rehabilitation services.

But Khaw, who is also MP for Sembawang GRC, hopes the new park and sports facilities will inspire residents to commit to a healthy lifestyle, in order that “our polyclinic will have no business”.

“(The doctors’) prescription will include an exercise routine. This time – no excuses,” he said.
