Indonesia Geek Girls to Launch in February, Aims to Connect More Female Entrepreneurs

Earlier this week we mentioned Singapore Geek Girl’s plans for 2013. But today we’re also pleased to let our Indonesian readers know that it also has a sister chapter on the way. The Indonesia Geek Girls team comprises seven volunteers, hailing from different cities around the country. ID Geek Girls is still in its early planning stages. It started up last September when the founder and CEO of Petshopbox Studio, Sissy, met up with the co-founder of Singapore Geek Girls, Joyce Huang, over lunch during her trip to Singapore. She highlighted her interest in building a blog for Indonesian women in the technology and startup scene, and that was when the idea of ID Geek Girls came into being. The group aspires to connect more women for its initiative. Sissy highlights some of the issues in trying to build this team:

We hope to reach out to more geek girls in Indonesia. At present, the entire team is based in Bandung, which makes it difficult for us to have the latest news or events coverage outside of Bandung. Initially, we were keen to tap into bigger cities with more geek communities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. But eventually we decided that we should also target cities where there are few geek communities, such as Malang, Makassar, Medan, and Palembang.

The team is also looking to organize some workshops for the women in the Indonesian technology and startup scene. The topics covered will be slightly different from the ones covered by the Singapore chapter. Sissy explains:

While the girls in Indonesia are not so much into the IT or technical side of things, they take a big interest in social media, startups (especially in the retail sector), and design. Therefore, we will be focusing on that area. Unfortunately, none of our team members have the experience in organizing workshops, hence our workshops will require more thorough and careful planning.

ID Geek Girls will officially launch this upcoming Valentine’s Day, where it will reveal more details about its plans and upcoming activities.
