House of Gucci director Ridley Scott responds to criticism from Gucci family

·2-min read

House of Gucci director Ridley Scott has responded to the real-life Gucci family after his new movie was criticised by them. The director has said that he 'doesn't understand' the outrage and 'tried to be as respectful as possible'. This comes as the Gucci heirs slammed the movie for being 'ignorant and insensitive'.

On Monday, the heirs of Aldo Gucci, who was the chairman of the fashion house from 1953 to 1986, issued a statement in response to the movie that stars Lady Gaga. In the statement, the family spoke of how they 'were not consulted before describing Aldo Gucci and the family as thugs'.

The statement read, "The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci — president of the company for 30 years — and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them." It continued, “This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”

"This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today," they elaborated.

Director Ridley Scott 'doesn't understand' the outrage though, and dubbed the Gucci family's response as 'alarmingly insulting'. He explained to Total Film, "I tried to be as respectful as possible by being as factual as possible, and as factual as we can possibly imagine."

This comes as designer Tom Ford recently wrote about what he thought of the film. Serving as creative director of the fashion house at the time of Maurizio’s murder, within the film he is described as the designer who revamped the brand as Maurizio had desired.

Writing about his thoughts on the film, he explained how he was 'deeply sad for several days after watching House of Gucci'. He said, "It was hard for me to see the humour and camp in something that was so bloody.”

Patrizia Gucci, one of Maurizio Gucci's second cousins, claimed earlier this year that the film was not true to life. Even though director Ridley Scott collaborated with the fashion house while working on the movie.
