Herman Miller wants to improve productivity with redesign of its famous Aeron chair

President Barack Obama , Tina Fey and Steve Carell have all been seen sitting in the same infamous Herman Miller (NASDAQ: MLHR) Aeron chair.

First introduced in 1994 and skyrocketing to become the best-selling and most recognizable performance chair of all time, Herman Miller has sold over 7 million chairs across 134 countries.

Twenty-plus years later, the company's CEO Brian Walker told " Mad Money " host Jim Cramer on Thursday that it plans to transform offices around the globe one step further with its first major redesign of the Aeron chair.

"Everything that we think about is 'how do we make your people more productive, more healthy and happy.' And if you do that, you're going to have better employees, whether they are working at home or working in the office," Walker said.

The founding of the Aeron chair was based on aeration, Walker said, to assist people who were aging to be able to do so in comfort. Herman Miller tweaked the ride of the chair for a smooth curve ride, and mesh that better conforms to the body.

"Now we know that people around offices often sit in multiple locations, and so they are not going to sit in just one chair. We wanted to make adjustments super easy so that when you went from chair to chair, you could dial it in faster for you," Walker said.

Herman Miller reported earnings a month ago and both top and bottom line numbers came in a bit lighter than expected. The stock was hit hard, falling to $27 a share from $32. However, Cramer thinks the new redesign could be a potential needle-mover for the stock.

Walker confirmed that the summer was soft for the company, much like the sentiment echoed by various industrial companies for that period.

"We didn't know at the time until we saw some of our competitors and other industrial companies talk about the same softness, but certainly as we got into August we saw much better performance," Walker said.
