Yahoo Finance Hari Raya 2018: 6 Online Shops with Affordable Baju Kurung
If you opt for luxurious fabrics and high-end brands, buying a baju kurung in Singapore can easily cost you $300 to $400, at least. And with less than a month before Raya, most of the tailors are already closed for orders so you probably won’t have much luck trying to get a bespoke outfit!
Thankfully, we’re in the age of online shopping – and that means you can still shop for a snazzy get-up in the comfort of your bed. It’s also cheaper than shopping at malls, with baju kurungs, kebayas and jubahs costing under $100. Those on sale can even be as affordable as $40!
Online stores for affordable baju kurung & Raya outfit shopping
Here are some online shopping sites where you can get affordable and trendy baju kurung and other Raya outfits.

Zalora Singapore
With over 15 brands, the specially curated Zaloraya collection has pieces for every budget: You can get super plain cotton tops and bottoms for under $30 each, but these are very casual. Most don’t consider these occasion wear, but it may be worth the purchase if you want something you can continue to wear after the festivities.
For a contemporary take on traditional costumes, see Jovian Mandagie for Zalora. The brand makes modern kurungs with Japanese influences – think kimono fabrics and obi belt accessories. The price range is between $100 to $250, but some are currently on sale for $50+! For more traditional ones, see Rizalman for Zalora. The original prices are between $170 to under $400, but many pieces are also on sale for under $100 now.
FashionValet
Although based in Malaysia, FashionValet offers free shipping to Singapore! Like Zalora, it’s a marketplace of sorts with over 50 brands. Some brands and designers even have FashionValet-exclusive collections. The cuttings are more traditional – for instance, few designs are cinched at the waist – but there is a variety of classic and simple to bold and elaborate textures.
Most dresses (and top-bottom sets) cost above $70 and go up to $350, but the with the current Hari Raya sale, you cop some stunning pieces for as cheap as $25. I particularly like the watercolour-inspired fabrics by House of Jazba. Plus, at $44 to $48 after discount, it’s a great deal! FashionValet carries some of the brands mentioned later in this list, like PopLook and Whimsigirl too.

PopLook
PopLook is an affordable clothing shop which is also based in Malaysia, but ships to Singapore for free too. There is a regular and premium range, but even the premium outfits don’t cost more than $120. The ones labelled “premium” are basically those with embellishments, embroidery, textured fabrics and the likes. The cheapest ones are about $60 and up.
PopLook doesn’t has as a big a selection as the online marketplaces like Zalora and FashionValet, but it for its price, it’s decent.
Ayu Apparels
Ayu Apparels is a homegrown Muslimah fashion brand, offering beautiful outfits for a very reasonable price tag. Their clothes are available for purchase online, but you can self-collect your clothes at their office in Woodlands. The clothes are all under $100, and you can get kurungs and kaftans in premium fabrics like satin, crepe and organza!
The solid colour ones are around $60, while the others are more expensive at $70 to $90+. For the younger shoppers, there are modern silhouettes like peplum tops and mermaid skirts. Shipping is free within Singapore, and if your order is above $200, you even get free same-day delivery.
OOH!
OOH! is a Malaysian brand, and is perfect for those who want matching mum-daughter outfits! Although available in bright colours and bold prints, the kurungs are quite casual, without any fancy accents like beads, embroidery or anything like that.
Although there are matching adult and children clothes, they are not sold in a set. An adult kurung would set you back about $100, while the child one is about $65. Unfortunately, shipping to Singapore is chargeable and depends on the weight of your item. There’s no chart or table for this, and you can only see the price at checkout – I tried it on a single adult baju kurung, and it costed me $27 (80 MYR) via FedEx Economy.
Also, do note that although you can switch the site prices to SGD, all payments are charged in MYR, so there may be slight discrepancies when you check your credit card bill.
Whimsigirl
Founded by architect graduate Syazana Sukiman, you can expect Whimsigirl’s pieces to be exceptionally well-made with special attention to the little details. It started out focusing on children’s wear, but has since expanded to include women’s wear just last year.
Although there isn’t much bling in the collection, you’ll find that some of the kurungs feature stylish accents like waisted belts and frills. I also noticed they carry outfits made of luxe velvet material – a 90s trend that’s fast coming back into fashion this year. Children kurungs cost around $60, while the adult ones are around $120 to $130. The velvet Azura Sets are the most expensive, at almost $180.
Shipping to Singapore addresses costs 25MYR (S$8.40) or 35MYR ($11.80) for express 2-3 day delivery.
Other shops that sell baju kurungs in Singapore
I’ve heard of popular shops like First Lady (formerly 2nd Chance) and RH Fashion at Tanjong Katong, but most families will have their own favourite haunts to hunt for Raya wear. If you just want casual long-sleeved tops and bottoms that are suitable for everyday wear, you can check out the Hana Tajima x Uniqlo Singapore collection and Pomelo Fashion’s Modest Wear range. Some also make weekend trips to JB and KL to shop.
But if by the eve of Raya you still can’t find the perfect #OOTD online, consider trying your luck at the Ramadan bazaars: Not only do you get to soak in the malam raya atmosphere, you can wait until closing (usually 1am – 2am) for the shops to lelong their clothes. Because it is the last day of the bazaar, store owners are more willing to sell you their beautiful clothes at a good discount.
