Hard-to-please Singaporean travellers among world's worst hotel reviewers: survey

The republic is 31st in terms of reviewer generosity.

Singaporean travellers are among the most demanding when it comes to giving hotel reviews, according to a survey by accommodation site Agoda.com.

The survey analyzed over 7 million reviews from 44 countries to see which nationalities tended to rate hotels higher or lower than average, and discovered that the global average review score is 8.52 out of 10.

Singapore bagged the 31st spot in the list, with travellers giving scores that are 0.12 points lower than average.

The most generous reviewers are from Russia, while the most demanding reviewers are from the United Arab Emirates.

The study found that Singaporean travellers are more demanding compared to tourists from neighbouring countries such as the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

However, travellers from Singapore were more generous with reviews when compared to travellers from Macau, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and India.

“Travelers from different countries tend to have different review rating standards depending on their travel patterns, spending power, and just general likes and dislikes,” says John Brown, Chief Operating Officer of Agoda.com
