Golden Globes Results 2021: Daniel Kaluuya hit by video call problem during acceptance speech

Watch: Daniel Kaluuya interviewed at the Golden Globes

Daniel Kaluuya suffered perhaps the most relatable struggle of the last 12 months when his video call was muted during his Golden Globes acceptance speech.

The British star won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton in the powerful drama Judas and the Black Messiah — but viewers heard only silence as he accepted the award.

Cameras cut back to presenter Laura Dern, who apologised for a "bad connection" with the 32-year-old winner.

Kaluuya then reappeared, quipping that the ceremony was "doing me dirty" before asking: "Is this on? Can you hear me now?"

Once his technical problems were resolved, Kaluuya was able to deliver his acceptance speech, praising director Shaka King as a "general" whose "vision and collaboration" got the movie over the line.

Kaluuya added: "Man, this took it out of me. I gave everything. Like the great Nipsey Hussle says, 'we're here to give until we're empty'.

"I gave everything and I couldn't give it to a more noble man. That's chairman Fred Hampton. I hope generations after this can say how brilliantly he thought, how brilliantly he spoke and how brilliantly he loved.

"He taught me about myself and made me grow as a man. I appreciate it with all my heart.

"There's a lot of information about how he died, but I hope people out there will grow and learn about how incredibly he lived."

Judas and the Black Messiah depicts the final years of Hampton, leading to his death at the hands of the FBI in 1969 — aged just 21.

Lakeith Stanfield portrays William O'Neal, who was used by the FBI as an informant within the Black Panther Party in Chicago, gathering information on Hampton and helping to facilitate the raid in which he died.

The cast also includes Dominique Fishback, Jesse Plemons and Martin Sheen under heavy prosthetics as notorious FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover.

Kaluuya beat out Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Jared Leto (The Little Things), Bill Murray (On the Rocks) and Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami) to win at the Golden Globes.

He is now the odds-on favourite to win in the category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and, subsequently, the Oscars.

Judas and the Black Messiah will be released in the UK via Warner Bros, but no release date has officially been set.
