Globus Medical to Redefine Spinal Fusion with ALTERA

Manufacturer of musculoskeletal implants, Globus Medical Inc. (GMED) recently announced the launch of ALTERA, which is claimed to be the first minimally intrusive expandable spacer that will be used for spinal fusion. The device has been particularly designed to address the various challenges like nerve damage that a surgeon comes across while inserting a spacer.

Spinal fusion or spondylosyndesis, a surgical technique used to join two or more vertebrae, is required to treat spinal disorders like lordosis. This complication causes abnormal inward curving of the lumbar and cervical regions of the spine.

The ALTERA spacer is inserted at a minimized height, hinged on an anterior position and then vertically expanded so that it can fit with utmost precision. This unique feature lends ALTERA an advantage over standard static transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (:TLIF) crescent-shaped spacers.

Once the implant has been enlarged, ALTERA allows in-situ transmission of self-generated bone graft into, as well as around that specific implant.

ALTERA is an interesting addition to the company’s growing portfolio of interbody cages which include CALIBER, RISE, CALIBER-L, LATIS, and MONUMENT.

The new offering is expected to augment Globus Medical’s market share and also help the company to compete against the likes of Zimmer Holdings (ZMH), Stryker Corp (SYK) and Exactech Inc. (EXAC).

Interestingly, peer Exactech announced the launch of Octane Elevate, a self-distracting lumber fusion device, at the North American Spine Society (:NASS) Annual Meeting where Globus Medical unveiled its ALTERA spacer.

In the recently concluded third quarter, Globus Medical’s disruptive technology sales, which include the interbody cages, increased a healthy 12.3% to $50.1 million on a year-over-year basis. Banking on this positive development, total annual sales are now anticipated in the range of $462 million to $467 million.

Currently, Globus Medical is a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) stock.
