Yahoo Finance Gigi Hadid Just Announced Her Daughter's Name In A Very Subtle Way
Updated article on 26/01/2021: It seems Gigi Hadid's recent reveal of her and Zayn Malik's daughter's name might not have been the first time she let slip on the moniker.
Several of the couple's fans have now suggested that the 25-year-old model may have revealed the name of their tot way back in November 2020.
Following her low-key announcement of her daughter's name - Khai - on Instagram in January, fans have noted that the model shared a photo on social media ahead of Christmas of a bucket emblazoned with her daughter's name.
The photo was the last in a series of holiday snaps on the star's Instagram Stories showing off her Christmas decor. On closer inspection at the photo in question, you can see that at the base of a Christmas tree sits a bucket marked with the word Khai and a heart.
Original article published on 23/01/21:Four months after the arrival of her first child, Gigi Hadid has shared the name of her baby girl.
The model and her partner Zayn Malik welcomed their daughter in September and have so far kept the name and face of their daughter private.
But, on Thursday (January 21), Hadid subtly updated her Instagram bio to: 'Khai's mom.'
Hadid and Malik have not elaborated further on their decision to name their daughter Khai, nor have they confirmed any middle names or surnames.
As expected, there are several theories circulating online around the origins and significance of the name choice.
Some have suggested the name is a nod to the Arabic roots in both of their families. Malik is of Pakistani heritage while Hadid's father, Mohamed is Palestinian. According to some speculators, the name 'Khai' reportedly means 'crowned' in Arabic, which would fit nicely with Malik's surname which means 'King'.
'Khai is a fresh and interesting choice for a daughter as the sound is most closely associated with boys,' baby name expert SJ Strum from parenting website Channel Mum told ELLE UK. 'Khai – the spelling used by Gigi and Zayn – is also a popular Vietnamese boys’ name meaning ‘Warrior Strong’'.
'However, Gigi and Zayn both hail from Muslim backgrounds and [a] form of the name translates as "Crowned" or "Royalty" in Arabic. It’s also breaking new ground as a gender neutral name, as around a third of parents now take this into consideration when choosing a baby name.
'I suspect the baby maybe nicknamed "Kiki" echoing mum’s Gigi, Kiki means "double happiness". Khai is currently unranked for girls in the UK meaning fewer than three children a year are given the name, although this is likely to change as more parents start to pick it. I predict it will be popular globally, as it’s so memorable.'
The name also bears similarities to other names that run in Hadid's family. For instance, her younger sister Bella's middle name is Khair, and her paternal grandmother was Khairiah Hadid.
Earlier this week, Hadid shared an photo on Instagram of herself with her daughter on her hip, confirming that Khai is now four months old and titling her 'the best kid'.
The model - who confirmed this week that she found out she was pregnant during New York Fashion Week, a day before walking for Tom Ford - has also been documenting her first child's many 'firsts' on social media.
This has included her first Halloween - where she was dressed as the Hulk, Malik was a Slytherin Hogwarts pupil and Hadid was gaming character Samus Aran - Khai's first snow, first Christmas and the first time Hadid voted in the presidential election as a mother, which she did with her daughter by her side.
