GE Aviation plans $100M Indiana engine plant

GE Aviation president says company in hurry to build $100M Indiana plant for new jet engine

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- GE Aviation's president says the company is in a hurry to build a $100 million jet engine manufacturing plant in Lafayette to fill orders for its new passenger airline engine.

The company announced Wednesday that it expected the factory where the engines will be assembled will open in 2016. GE said it anticipated more than 200 people would be working at the factory within five years.

GE Aviation president David Joyce told a crowd at the Purdue University Airport that the company already has orders for more than 6,000 of its new LEAP engine that's now undergoing development testing.

That new engine will be used by Airbus and Boeing passenger jets for airlines worldwide.
