Drivers offered free MOT tests as cost of living bites

Halfords (HFD.L) has teamed up with Charity Family action to offer 1,000 free MOT tests to put the brakes on the cost of living crisis.

Four in ten UK drivers (38%) said they have concerns about, or definitely won’t be able to, afford their next MOT, with a further 17% saying they’re not sure if they will be able to or not, according to a survey commissioned by Halfords.

Amongst those who had concerns, 45% said that if even if can’t afford an MOT, they will continue to drive their car regardless.

To get a free MOT, the driver will need to be part Family Action and be selected by the charity.

David Holmes, chief executive of Family Action, said: “We are delighted to be working with Halfords and we are extremely grateful for the donation of 1,000 free MOTs to share with the families we support. As the survey reveals, it is essential for many families to have access to a safe and roadworthy car for work, and for their day-to-day activities.

"It will ensure that they have peace of mind that their car is safe and roadworthy, and it will be one less thing for them to worry about.” The research showed as many as four in 10 drivers will struggle affording their next MOT test.

For those who are not eligible for a free MOT, Halfords has slashed the cost of its MOTs to £39.99 – a saving of £14.96.

Those signed up for its Motoring Club, an extra £10 can be saved on top of this (£29.99).

Chris Lunn, head of category at Halfords Autocentres said: "Not having an MOT puts them at risk of losing their car, and therefore their job, making their financial situation far worse. That’s why we’re trying to help by offering free MOTs to families who rely on their car but are struggling financially and discounted MOTs for all Brits to help keep motoring affordable.”
