Five things to catch at this year's FIAC contemporary art fair in Paris

The 45th edition of the FIAC international contemporary art fair runs October 18-21 in Paris, based in the French capital's Grand Palais. Here's a pick of five installations, artworks and exhibitions to catch at this year's event.

Functional sculptures by Karl Lagerfeld

The "Architectures" exhibition showcases a selection of "functional sculptures" by the legendary fashion designer and Chanel creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. Inspired by ancient architecture, the pieces come in black and white marble and take the form of pedestal tables, tables, lamps, console tables, fountains and mirrors.

"Karl Lagerfeld. Architectures." October 19-22, 2018, at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, 54 Rue de la Verrerie, Paris.

A sea of starfish in Place Vendôme

This year brings a poetic creation to one of the French capital's most prestigious squares, with an installation by the artist duo, Elmgreen & Dragset. The pair have covered Place Vendôme with starfish, which, legend has it, are reflections of the stars in the sky on the ocean floor.

Two works by Pablo Reinoso

The Argentinian artist has two works on show at the 2018 edition of FIAC, inspired by his exploration of materials, in particular, steel girders. "L'Arche," outside the Petit Palais, echoes the building's entrance, framing its door while also offering passers-by somewhere to sit and providing a new vantage point between the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais.

"Le Cercle" is installed in the small octagonal pool in the Jardin des Tuileries and comprises eight sculptures that stand along the stunning perspective connecting the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe.

"L'Arche," October 5-21 outside the Petit Palais, and "Le Cercle," until November 7 in the small octagonal pool at the Jardin des Tuileries.

Established artists and rising stars at Maison Guerlain

For the 12th edition of its partnership with FIAC, Maison Guerlain is showcasing the work of established artists as well as upcoming talents. The "Futurs Antérieurs" exhibition features around 20 works ranging from installations to photos and videos, drawings and paintings. Themes include time, sharing and legacy. Guerlain also celebrates its 190th anniversary this year.

"Futurs Antérieurs" October 19 to November 9, 2018, Maison Guerlain, 68 avenue des Champs-Elysées, Paris.

A century of abstract hanging sculpture

The "Suspension" exhibition presents a century of abstract sculpture. The show features over 50 hanging works by more than 30 artists, such as Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Yves Klein, Daniel Buren, Louise Bourgeois and Olafur Eliasson at the Palais d'Iéna.

"Suspension: A history of abstract hanging sculpture 1918-2018" October 16-28, Palais d'Iéna, 9 place d'Iéna, Paris.
