While we all patiently wait for The Witcher season two to drop this December, we also have some very exciting news about The Witcher season three. Here's everything we know about the third instalment of the much-loved fantasy show.

When was The Witcher season 3 confirmed?

Netflix *officially* confirmed the show was happening on 25 September 2021. "Toss a coin to our growing Witcher universe!" they wrote. "We can officially announce The Witcher Season 3, along with a second anime feature film, and a new Kids and Family series set in the world of The Witcher."

Wow. Talk about expanding the Witcher world.

Back in July 2021, Lad Bible revealed screenwriting for the much-anticipated follow up had started.

What will The Witcher season 3 be about?

Fans of the series will already know that The Witcher is based on the books of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, and created for Netflix by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Season one followed Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer and Princess Ciri, while Lauren previously said season 2 will also take more material from The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny. And given that there's five books, it's safe to say we can expect to see more characters and more storylines coming up in the third season.

The end of season two is said to pick up on a few details from the second book, The Time of Contempt. It makes sense then that the third series will follow the plot of the book, in which Ciri works on completing her sorceress training and later meets Geralt.

Who will star in The Witcher season 3?

While nothing has been confirmed, we're pretty sure The Witcher's main characters will return. Those include Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Enola Holmes, The Tudors) as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as Yennefer and Freya Allan (Gunpowder Milkshake) as Princess Ciri.

Depending on what happens in season two (side note: will anyone be killed off?!), we can expect the likes of Anna Shaffer (Triss), Joey Batey (Jaskier), Eamon Farren (Cahir), MyAnna Buring (Tissaia), Lars Mikkelson (Stregobor), Terence Maynard (Artorius), Tom Canton (Filavandrel), Royce Pierreson (Istredd) and Therica Wilson-Read (Sabrina) to also return.

Is there a trailer for The Witcher season 3?

Bearing in mind that writing for the third season started in the summer, and we've no word on filming yet, we'll probably be waiting a while for the trailer. Until then, why not rewatch the first season to really get yourself in The Witcher mood.

When will The Witcher season 3 be released?

No word on an official release date yet either, so watch this space. While you wait, season two of The Witcher is scheduled to drop on Netflix on 17 December 2021.
