Everyone who Donald Trump pardoned on his last day being president

It's official, as of midnight last night, Donald J. Trump is no longer President of the United States of America. But being Donald J. Trump, he didn't go out without a bang. In his last 24-hours in power, Trump pardoned a lot of people, meaning they are now free from federal criminal conviction.

The White House issued a list of no less than 73 - yes, seventy-three - individuals who have been granted clemency by the now-former President. As well as that, Donald Trump also commuted the sentences of another 70 people, which means a prison sentence they are currently serving will either be shortened or scrapped completely.

It's totally legal and actually quite common for outgoing presidents to issue pardons before they leave office, having first been suggested by Alexander Hamilton in 1787, who insisted it would "restore the tranquillity of the commonwealth."

Earlier this week, speculation was rife that Trump might use his final day in power to pardon big cat lover Joe Exotic, who was convicted of animal abuse and murder for hire charges against Carole Baskin in April 2019 and is currently serving out a 22 year prison sentence in Fort Worth, Texas.

Despite grand plans from Exotic's lawyer to have a limo and a hair stylist awaiting him upon imminent freedom, it doesn't look like the former 'zoo' owner will be exiting jail any time soon.

Some of the more notable people who did make the cut for pardoning, however, include rapper Lil Wayne, who pleaded guilty to a weapons charge last year. The BBC reports Lil Wayne previously "posted a photo of himself with Mr Trump during the election campaign praising the president's work on criminal reform," so perhaps that went some way to sway Trump.

Also in the mix was Steve Bannon, an adviser to President Trump during his 2016 election campaign, who was charged last summer for fraud relating to a fundraising campaign to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. Ken Kurson was also on the list; a friend of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who was previously charged with cyberstalking during a divorce.
