European stocks close mostly higher, Italy skids 2.2%

Europe's main stock markets closed slightly higher on Monday, despite political turmoil in Italy, with London's FTSE 100 index of leading companies edging up 0.12 percent to 5,921.63 points.

In Frankfurt, the DAX 30 gained 0.17 percent to 7,530.92 points, while in Paris the CAC 40 finished up 0.18 percent to 3,612.10 points.

But in Milan, the FTSE Mib plummeted 2.2 percent to 15,354 points in the first session since caretaker Prime Minister Mario Monti said he would resign, forcing snap elections.
