Esso Petrol Discounts in Singapore – Which Credit Card is Best?

You would think that having a co-branded credit card like the DBS Esso MasterCard would automatically make it the first choice when buying petrol from Esso. As it turns out, that’s not true. To get the most credit card discounts at Esso, you should use the Citibank DIVIDEND Card.

However, for motorcycle riders, the DBS Esso MasterCard might be the better option. Either way, don’t forget to apply for your Esso Smiles Card too if you haven’t done so already. Here are the available credit card discounts for Esso.

Since you are charging more than $50, you will want to use the Citibank DIVIDEND Card. You will immediately get 14% off your bill. That means you will only be charged $112.57. You will also have a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $5.63. Your total discount is $23.96 or about 18.3%.

Total discount using Citibank DIVIDEND Card = $23.96

Case Study 2: 1,600cc Car, Petrol Tank 50 litres

Petrol Cost = $93.50

Since the amount being charged is still more than $50, you should use the Citibank DIVIDEND Card. You will immediately get 14% off your bill. That means you will only be charged $80.41. You will also have a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $4.02. Your total discount is $17.11 or almost 18.3%.

Case Study 3: 1,000cc Car, Petrol Tank 36 litres

Petrol Cost = $67.32

Once again, the amount you’re charging to the card is above $50, so for the highest discount you will want to use the Citibank DIVIDEND Card. You will immediately get 14% off your bill. That means you will only be charged $57.89. You will also have a cash rebate of 5% of the discounted amount, which comes up to $2.89. Your total discount is $12.32 or about 18.3%.

Case Study 4: Motorcycle, Petrol Tank 15 litres

Petrol Cost = $28.05

Now since you are spending less than $50, you should use the DBS Esso MasterCard. You get 17% off immediately by using the card. That means you charge $23.28 to your card. Your total discount is 17%, or $4.77.

Total discount using DBS Esso MasterCard = $4.77

So, in short…

If your petrol cost at Esso comes up to $50 or more, even with falling petrol prices, then use the Citibank DIVIDEND card. If not, the DBS Esso MasterCard will give you the best discount.

One thing to note, the Citibank DIVIDEND card can only earn up to $800 in cashback a year. Also, the cash rebates do expire if they’re not redeemed. So do pay attention to your credit card statement.

You may also consider using another Citibank credit card to help you with your Esso petrol discounts, especially if you plan to take advantage of the card’s other benefits like dining privileges or air miles. Alternatively, just apply for another credit card. Most people keep multiple cards for that reason. Find the best credit card in Singapore for your lifestyle choices today.
