Emmerdale confirms suspicious death from Meena Jutla's past

Note: The following article contains discussion of themes including suicide that some readers may find upsetting.

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale has revealed Meena Jutla's backstory as she continues her desperate attempts to reunite Manpreet Sharma and Charles Anderson.

Viewers have seen Meena (Paige Sandhu) become obsessed with her sister's love life in recent months, regularly resorting to desperate measures to get her own way.

Earlier this year, Meena fooled Charles's son Ethan by impersonating his long-lost mother via a burner phone. She hoped this would push Manpreet closer to the Andersons again and was pleased when it partly paid off.

More recently, Meena tried to sabotage Charles's plans to go away on a camping trip with his new girlfriend Andrea Tate. Meena cruelly shut Andrea's pet dog Princess in a hot car, nearly killing her.

Friday's (June 11) Emmerdale episode delved deeper into Meena's meddling as she confided in Diane Sugden about her past.

During a heart-to-heart with Diane at the beauty salon, Meena revealed that she regrets not doing more to help an old friend, Nadine, who wasn't happy. She explained that Nadine later took her own life.

Meena admitted: "I do get over-involved, I know I do. I just want everyone in their right place and with the right person.

"My friend made a mistake. I should have been there for her but I wasn't. I should have talked to her, but I didn't.

"I tried, but she rejected me, so I backed off and left her to work it through on her own and she killed herself."

Meena explained that she once had a strong friendship with Nadine, but things went wrong when a new group of friends got involved with her.

Meena sensed they were gradually chipping away at Nadine's confidence and making her unhappy, but backed off when Nadine rejected her help.

Nadine was later found dead and Meena struggled to cope, deciding not to go to the funeral. She has also never told Manpreet what happened.

Meena added: "So now, when I see someone in emotional pain, it triggers something in me – that I'm useless and I need to act. Sometimes I think Manpreet's not happy."

However, Meena was later seen reading an old newspaper clipping about Nadine's death, which hinted that she may not have shared the full story.

The headline of the newspaper read: "Woman found dead in suspicious circumstances."

A further segment of the article continued: "Nadine Butler, aged 22, was found dead in her car yesterday after inhaling carbon monoxide fumes. Police suspect foul play and are appealing for witnesses."

Does Meena know more about Nadine's death than she's letting on?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
