New elderly centre at Jurong West

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam officially opened a new activity centre in Jurong West on Sunday which encourages elderly Singaporeans to stay fit and healthy, according to a Channel NewsAsia report.

The Adventist Active Centre aims to promote active ageing amongst the 'golden' generation, especially for 300 seniors residing in studio apartments at Block 530, Jurong West Avenue 1.

Managed by a volunteer welfare group, the facility comes with a dental centre and community gym. Aside from jogging on a treadmill and doing other exercises, they can also engage in activities like calligraphy.

Whenever we build studio apartments, in particular, we work together with the relevant ministries and agencies to provide facilities that will support the elderly and active ageing, said Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee.

In addition to studio apartments, around the community, wherever space allows and where planning parameters require it, we will make provisions for such facilities to allow our seniors to age actively, healthily and happily, added Lee, who is also an MP for Jurong GRC.

In addition, the authorities will erect another elderly centre in Toa Payoh by October.
