Disney gives green light to 'The lion King' live-action remake

A still from the original animated Disney film "The Lion King"

The Walt Disney Company has confirmed it is moving ahead with a live-action adaptation of one of its highest grossing animated films of all time -- "The Lion King" -- with Jon Favreau attached to direct.

Favreau helmed "The Jungle Book" adaptation -- which blended CG characters and environments with a live-action Mowgli -- and is now also in charge of its sequel "The Jungle Book 2".

While few specifics about "The Lion King" live-action remake have been released as yet, the fresh adaptation will reportedly feature songs from the iconic 1994 film (via IndieWire).

"The Lion King" is the latest in a string of live-action adaptations by Disney, which have so far included "Maleficent", followed by Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella," "The Jungle Book" and upcoming, reimagined features such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid."
