Yahoo Finance COVID-19: Singapore confirms 42 new cases, including 3 Singaporeans
SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed 42 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore as of Wednesday (12 August) noon, taking the country’s total case count to 55,395.
Of the cases, there is one community case, 11 imported cases, and 30 foreign workers residing in dormitories.
About 800 foreign workers were newly quarantined after the discovery of a COVID-19 case amongst them in a cleared dormitory. The MOH did not reveal the name or location of the dormitory.
The sole community case is a 58-year-old Singaporean man (case 55469) who had been identified as a contact of a previously confirmed case. He had been placed on quarantine earlier, and was tested during quarantine.
Chong Pang Wet Market & Food Centre is among the new locations added by the MOH to the list of public places visited by COVID-19 cases in the community recently.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of two cases per day in the past two weeks. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also remained stable at an average of one case per day in the past two weeks.
Amongst the 11 imported cases, two are Singaporeans – an eight-year-old boy (case 55439) and a 37-year-old man (case 55436) – who returned to Singapore from India on 3 July and from Indonesia on 30 July respectively. The boy had served his Stay-Home Notice (SHN) with his parent and siblings in the same room at a dedicated facility, and was subsequently placed on quarantine when his SHN contacts tested positive for COVID-19. He was tested during quarantine to verify his status.
Four cases (Nos. 55444, 55464, 55465 and 55470) are dependant’s pass holders who arrived from India on 28 July and 31 July. Another four cases (Nos. 55455, 55456, 55457 and 55458) are work pass/work permit holders currently employed in Singapore who arrived from the Philippines on 29 July and from India on 31 July.
All of them had been placed on 14-day SHN upon arrival in Singapore, and were serving their SHN at dedicated facilities.
The remaining case (No. 55471) is a seaman currently holding a Special Pass who arrived in Singapore from India on 8 August on a vessel. He reported symptoms and was swabbed while on the vessel. He had remained on the vessel until his test result came back positive for COVID-19, and was subsequently conveyed to a hospital.
The Inter-agency Taskforce has completed the testing of all workers in the dormitories. There are currently about 22,800 workers who are still serving out their quarantine period. These workers will be tested when their quarantine ends.
Over 50,500 discharged; none in ICU
With 392 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Wednesday, 50,520 cases – some 91 per cent of the tally – have fully recovered from the infection.
Most of the 92 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, while none is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
A total of 4,756 patients with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
Apart from 27 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.
“Only cases where the attending doctor or pathologist attributes the primary or underlying cause of death as due to COVID-19 infection will be added to the COVID-19 death count,” said the MOH in previous press releases, adding that the method of assessment is consistent with international practices for classifying deaths.
