Bridgerton's Regé-Jean Page will star in a movie reboot of The Saint, in the role previously played by Bond star Roger Moore.

The 31-year-old actor - who has been rumoured as Daniel Craig's 007 replacement - will play Simon Templar in the drama based on the early 20th century adventure novels by Leslie Charteris.

Enigmatic and wealthy adventurer Templar is also known as The Saint, and hellbent on a mission to prevent criminals from succeeding.

James Bond's Moore played the lead in iconic British TV series in the 1960s, with Regé confirming the news by sharing a picture of the legendary actor complete with halo from the black and white thriller. Val Kilmer took on the part for the 1997 movie adaptation.

Playwright and actor Kwame Kwei-Armah has been brought in to write a new draft of the script for the adventure thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Regé is currently one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors following his breakthrough role as the Duke of Hastings in Netflix's biggest drama series of all time Bridgerton.

He recently confirmed that he would not be returning to the period drama, telling Variety: "It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year.

"[I thought] 'That’s interesting,' because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on."

Regé added: "I have nothing but excitement for Bridgerton continuing to steam train off and conquer the globe. But there is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing."

Bridgerton series two - for which filming has been indefinitely halted due to a crew or cast member testing positive for Covid - will focus on Anthony Bridgerton, and his quest to find a wife.

Bridgerton season two will return to Netflix in 2022.
