Bren Esports' Pheww: 'We want to face Alter Ego in the finals' at M2

Filipino team Bren Esports are one of the favourites to take home the championship at the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) M2 World Championship, but standing between them and the trophy are the team that have recently grown to become their biggest rivals: Indonesian squad Alter Ego.

Bren Esports’ team captain, Angelo Kyle “Pheww” Arcangel, certainly made his team’s goals clear in an interview with Yahoo Esports SEA.

“We consider Alter Ego the team to beat in this tournament. We want to face Alter Ego in the finals because we want to have our revenge,” said Pheww.

While winning M2 and earning the title of the best team in Mobile Legends should be enough motivation for anyone, Bren Esports are further fuelled by their desire for vengeance over their bitter rivals.

In early December last year, Bren Esports faced Alter Ego in the grand finals of the ONE Esports MLBB Pro League Invitational (MPLI). As the champions of MPL Philippines — then widely considered to be the strongest country in Mobile Legends — Bren were heavily favoured to take the title in what was expected to be a thriller of a matchup.

Unfortunately, Bren Esports were barely able to put up a fight as Alter Ego soundly swept them, 3-0, to become the champions of the ONE Esports MPLI.

If nothing else, that defeat served as a reminder for Bren Esports that they still had room to grow. For Pheww, it highlighted areas of improvement for the team and gave them something to focus on as they prepared for M2.

“We still need to fix our errors and greediness. We train hard and practice different all the different [metagames] so that we will be ready to face them,” said Pheww.

“We want to be champions”

But for Karl Gabriel “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno, Bren Esports’ star player known for both saying very few words yet sounding supremely confident in interviews, the team already has what it takes to exact their revenge on Alter Ego.

“The team is already very good. We want to face Alter Ego [in the finals] and we will be the champions,” said KarlTzy.

Bren Esports won’t have to wait until the finals to face Alter Ego again, however. Both teams were seeded into Group B, also known as M2’s ‘group of death,’ alongside Japanese team 10S Gaming Frost.

A highly-anticipated rematch of the ONE Esports MPLI grand finals will take place on the second day of the tournament’s group stage on Tuesday (19 January).

Whoever wins that matchup will most probably secure the top seed of their group and a spot in the Upper Bracket of the playoffs, while the other will either have to start from the Lower Bracket or get eliminated early.

KarlTzy remains confident his team will take down Alter Ego in their next meeting. Such a result could mean that Bren Esports might not end up facing their rivals in the playoffs or the finals, something KarlTzy doesn’t seem to mind too much.

“I don’t really care who our opponents are,” said KarlTzy.

Such confidence is what really gives Bren Esports the edge over their opponents, Pheww remarked. The captain reasoned that they already have the talent and the chemistry, but supreme confidence that they will win against any adversary only amplifies their performance.

“We should always have our confidence and think that we are better than everyone, because, for us, that will set our minds to never doubt our skills,” said Pheww.

Bren Esports isn’t the only team gunning to take down Alter Ego, however. Their regional rivals, Omega Esports also wants to challenge Alter Ego for the championship at M2.

The M2 World Championship will run from 18-24 January in Singapore behind closed doors due to COVID-19.
