Billy Eichner making history with all-LGBTQ+ cast for new rom-com

Billy Eichner's upcoming movie Bros is set to be historic in more ways than one.

The film was confirmed earlier this year to be the first rom-com about gay men to be produced by a big studio, with the American Horror Story star set to be the first openly gay actor to write and star in his own major film.

Bros will now also break new ground by having an all-LGBTQ+ cast, with all the heterosexual roles played by openly LGBTQ+ actors and actresses, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Set for release next year, the movie follows two gay men (played by Eichner and Luke Macfarlane) who may be stumbling towards love.

"I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all openly LGBTQ+ cast of Bros," Eichner said. "After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast.

"And while Bros may be the first of its kind in several ways, my real hope is that it is only the first of many opportunities for openly LGBTQ+ ensembles to shine and show the world all we are capable of as actors, beyond just being the wacky sidekick, token queer or a straight movie star's 'gay best friend.' And beyond all of that, this cast is f**king hysterical and you're going to love them."

Also on board to star are RuPaul's Drag Race winner Symone and TS Madison (Zola), the transgender author of Light Through the Shade: An Autobiography of a Queen.

Miss Lawrence (The United States vs Billie Holiday), who is gender non-conforming, has also been cast, as has Guillermo Diaz (Scandal) and Guy Branum (Talk Show the Game Show).

Eichner co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller, with the latter on board to direct Bros.

Bros is scheduled for release in 2022.
