‘Automatic Millionaire’ David Bach: 2 Books Millennials Should Read (And How They’ll Help You Build Wealth)

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been making money for a while now, chances are you can still learn a thing or two from the pros. David Bach, a financial expert and the author of “The Automatic Millionaire,” is one of those pros.

Bach has a lot of valuable input when it comes to improving one’s finances and building and maintaining wealth. In a July 2024 newsletter, he discussed two books he said he wished he’d read in his 30s and 40s. If you’re a millennial, you’re exactly within that age range right now, so these books might be helpful for you as well.

These are the two books Bach suggested reading right now, as well as how you can apply the lessons of these books to your finances to help you build wealth.

Earning passive income doesn't need to be difficult. You can start this week.

Arthur Brooks’ ‘From Strength To Strength’

The first book for millennials is “From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life” by Arthur Brooks.

“This book really takes a look at how our lives change in our 50’s — which we hope is midlife,” Bach wrote. “Interestingly, I wish I had read this book in my 30’s or my 40’s because it really explains a lot of what happens to us — our energy, emotions and drive as we age. It lays out the ‘why’ behind the second half of our lives, and suggests the reasons and ways the second half of our life can be our best half. Without question, it’s worth a read.”

This book essentially serves as a roadmap to finding meaning, purpose and success as we get older. The author dives into how to transform a future of disappointment into an opportunity for progress. He draws on a combination of real-life interviews, social science, philosophy and more to show that true life success — whatever that might mean for you — is within reach. And he dives into how you can change your priorities and habits alike to achieve greater happiness.

If part of your goal is to become happy, successful and wealthy, you may be able to apply this book’s lessons to your own life.

Chip Conley’s ‘Learning to Love Midlife’

Next up is Chip Conley’s “Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age.”

If you end up reading and enjoying the previous book, you might want to check out Conley’s work as well. According to Bach, much of the real how-to advice in Brooks’ book actually comes from Conley.

“Chip lays out why life gets better with age. I am obsessed with this concept as I do my utmost to enjoy this part of my life to its fullest, even with the challenges it presents. I wish I had a book like this in my 40’s,” Bach wrote in his newsletter. “There really is a road map that can help us all approach life as we get older. This little book has lovely tools to help us open our minds and souls to reimagine what is possible. Honestly, this book may be good for you even if you are under 40.”

For millennials who are trying to build wealth, this book isn’t just a “how-to guide on how to embrace midlife as a time of transformation and joy” as Bach put it. It can also help you gain perspective as you find other ways — uniquely your own — to get a handle on your finances now and in the long term.

Bonus Suggestion: ‘The Automatic Millionaire’

And, of course, if you’re really looking for a book that can help you on the path to financial success, there’s always Bach’s very own “The Automatic Millionaire.”

“If you have ever wanted a quick financial kick in the butt, along with a financial cheerleader, this is your book,” Bach wrote. “The Automatic Millionaire will teach you how to put your entire financial life on autopilot in less than an hour.”

In brief, this book is all about how to live rich and retire even richer — without it having to be complicated. The system in the book is pretty straightforward and based on timeless principles. It also includes updated information on investments, taxes and so on — things that can automate and simplify your financial life.
