'Evans Cycles won't honour my £50 leaving gift voucher'

I received an Evans Cycles gift card for the amount of £50 from colleagues as part of a leaving present a couple of years ago. When I presented the card at a store in London a few days ago, the card was refused as it had expired.

After pleading my case at the store to no avail, I corresponded with the head of customer relations, who said the company was not prepared to go against its policy for fear of setting a precedent. I dealt with Halfords on a similar matter and they simply reissued my gift card immediately.

ME, Oxfordshire

I contacted Evans Cycles, which said it imposed a two-year limit for its gift cards from the date of purchase or a rolling two-year limit from the date it was last used.

This is explained in the T&Cs printed on the reverse of the piece of cardboard to which the wallet-sized gift card is attached. The expiry information is halfway down a 13-line list of T&Cs, which is in a print size so small that it takes up around a quarter of the space of the backing.

The gift card itself, designed to fit perfectly in a purse or wallet, contains no information about expiry terms.

Evans Cycles remained completely unwilling to assist.

A spokesman said: “Our gift vouchers have an expiry date. This is clearly listed on the card the gift voucher is attached to, stating that the voucher will be valid for two years from the date of purchase or last use of the card. Mr E’s gift voucher expired on March 12 2018, so we are unable to honour it as it is well past this date.”

Your experience serves as a fresh warning to anyone thinking of buying a gift card, as it is possible the money will disappear into the company’s coffers.
