'New electricity meter sent direct debit charge soaring – now we're owed £20k'

Scottish Power has supplied electricity since we moved here in 2012. When it decided to provide a new meter in May 2013, it found that the installed meter had not had the indoor swimming pool connected when it was constructed in around 2007. 

The charges increased considerably, as we would expect. However, they have gone up even more than makes sense. One monthly direct debit was £1,200. Last month £902 was taken.

We have a large three-bedroom house, but the calculations appear at fault. I have been requesting a check meter be installed since 2014, without success.

I have now had our own check meter installed, which shows a huge discrepancy that would confirm our belief there is something amiss. The primary heating in the house is oil fired and therefore separate.

You had been writing to and phoning Scottish Power, getting nowhere. You were worried stiff. You arranged for your own check meter to be installed. 

Now a full investigation has been carried out. All usage has been assessed back to May 2013.

Scottish Power has removed the overcharged usage from August 2016 when you wrote a very detailed letter to it.

The refund amounts to a staggering £19,613.64. Scottish Power has also paid £885 for interest. You are satisfied with the result.
