Who is Anuradha Chaudhary, Rajasthan’s Lady Don and Revolver Rani?

Anuradha Chaudhary was arrested from Sahranpur in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, July 30. Also arrested with her was Kala Jathedi, one of Delhi’s most wanted criminals. Between the two of them, they carried a reward of Rs 6,10,000.

Even though the reward on Chaudhary’s arrest was a humble Rs 10,000, she was one of the most dreaded gangster in Rajasthan accused in over 12 criminal cases that include abduction, extortion and firing of a loaded weapon. It wasn’t for no reason that Anuradha Chaudhary was called Rajasthan’s Lady Don and Revolver Rani.

There isn’t much known about Anuradha Chaudhary except that unlike several hardened criminals, she was well-read, educated and even spoke English fluently. She is said to have had considerable influence on her partners who seemed drawn in by her sophistication that they themselves lacked.

Among those who were taken in by her charms was one Anandpal Singh who had wreaked havoc in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan in mid-10s. Eventually, Singh was killed in a police encounter in 2017 following which Anuradha Chaudhary joined Kala Jathedi’s gang.

Some believe that Singh wanted to install Chaudhary at the head of his operations and expand his businesses overseas and put himself in the league of Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Shakeel among others.

Anuradha Chaudhary holds a degree in computer applications and is said to have had a fairly regular childhood.

News reports suggest that she took to crime mostly to fund her personal ambitions and saw the underbelly as an easy road to make a quick buck. It may be easy to dismiss Chaudhary as a gangster’s moll but some believe that she was very much her own person and held her own.

Could she have been the mastermind behind the empire of these powerful men? It may be too soon to speculate that but it was clear to the Delhi Police that arresting her wasn’t an easy task.

It took the Delhi Police’s Special Cell and Crime Branch teams nearly six months to arrest Anuradha Chaudhary and Kala Jathedi.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell-Counter Intelligence) Manishi Chandra the joint task force comprised 38 police officers. These officers had been tracking Chaudhary all over the country and may have travelled nearly 10,000 km in the last six months on the hunt.

Anuradha Chaudhary led the police on a chase across state lines that included Goa, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Odisha.

Chaudhary’s end may have begun with a tip-off that she and Jathedi were in Goa. This led the police team to look for her in the beach state. Some old-fashioned police work eventually led them from one state to another before they finally arrested the two in Sahranpur in Uttar Pradesh.

What makes this arrest significant is that till they were caught, the police didn’t have either of their mobile phone details so they could trace their exact location.
