New Amsterdam spoilers follow.

New Amsterdam star Anupam Kher, who plays Dr Vijay Kapoor, will not be returning to the NBC medical drama.

TVLine reports that the actor will not be seen again by viewers, after being absent since the beginning of season three. In the April 13 episode, it was confirmed that Dr Kapoor had resigned from the hospital.

The season 3 opener revealed that Dr Kapoor had contracted coronavirus, which led medical director Max Goodwin to call in help from an old friend: cardiovascular surgeon Dr Floyd Reynolds.

In real life, Kher's wife, actress Kirron Kher, has been undergoing treatment for blood cancer, as reported by The Hindustan Times.

"She is currently undergoing treatment and we are sure she will come out of this stronger than before. We are very blessed that she is being looked after by a phenomenal set of doctors," Kher said in a statement.

The actor added that his wife is "well on her way to recovery and we thank everyone for their support and love".

Last month, New Amsterdam's showrunner David Schulner spoke about the decision to bring back Dr Reynolds after he left at the end of season 2 to pursue a new job in San Francisco.

Schulner said: "Well, he's only returning to do Vijay's surgery, and it gave us a great opportunity to bring Reynolds back for at least one episode to do this surgery.

"He was going to be living in San Francisco, practicing at another hospital as of last year, and again, none of this was planned. Season 2 didn't end with any of this or set up any of this, because we didn't know it was going to happen."

Schulner continued: "Like everyone else's lives [which] got interrupted and went down a road no one anticipated, it's true for the characters on our show. All their stories from last year are interrupted and put on hold or diverted or completely upended, and we're following through on that."

New Amsterdam airs on NBC in America, while Amazon Prime Video and NOW carry the show in the UK. It's also available on All4.
