Two polar bear cubs hide behind mom after spotting Arctic hare

These polar bear cubs had a sweet, scaredy-cat moment, and mom was there to save the day.

In PEOPLE's exclusive look at the new episode of National Geographic's Incredible Animal Journeys — a seven-part series narrated by Jeremy Renner — viewers get a peek at polar bear parenting.

In the clip, a mother polar bear emerges from her den with her two young cubs. For the baby bears, it is their first time experiencing the Arctic outdoors.

"She leads them into a new world of sights, sounds, and scares," Renner narrates as the furry family paws across the snow.

The cubs casually stroll through their rugged surroundings until an Arctic hare appears nearby.

"One day, they'll grow up to be the world's most powerful land predator," Renner says as the polar bear cubs catch sight of the hare.

The little animals react to the hare sighting not with strength and bravery but fear. After spotting the tiny critter, the baby bears take cover behind their mom, standing against her body to shield themselves from the little hare.

The cubs let out little squeals to let their mom, who appears unbothered by the hare hopping by, know they are scared of the much smaller creature.

The mother bear lets the hare bounce away before continuing her trek with her cubs.

As Renner notes in the clip, the polar bear mom will help her cubs grow into strong, fearsome predators, "but not today."

Before the cubs become brave like mom, they must learn to hunt and survive in the Arctic.
