The ABC song is changing: mom sings school’s new alphabet song in ‘breaking news’ TikTok

A TikTok mom is going viral for announcing — and performing — the new ABC song her kids’ school is teaching.

Mom of 7, Jess (@jesssfamofficial), blew people’s minds when she recorded her ‘breaking news’ announcement of the new ABC song — and parents everywhere have strong opinions on the matter.

In the video, Jess performs the new alphabet song — and at first, it doesn’t seem that different. Letters A through K were sung exactly as we were all taught growing up.

However, when Jess gets to L, everything changes. The new ABC song lumps together the letters “L-M-N,” rather than the standard “L-M-N-O-P” we’ve all been taught.

From there, the song is nearly unrecognizable — until, finally, it concludes with the lines, “Now I never will forget / how to say my alphabet.”

The video, at over 9M views, is clearly a huge hit on TikTok — but it’s the nearly 70K comments that proves this video is truly making waves…

‘I REFUSE to accept this’

And most of these comments are not in favor of the new ABC song.

“DON’T FIX WHAT’S NOT BROKEN!” reads one comment.

“Old version is wayyy better,” wrote another user.

“I REFUSE to accept this,” said another comment.

“This hurts my brain,” said another comment.

But some people could understand the reason behind the new lyrics. “It’s so kids don’t say L-M-N-O ‘ellemeno,'” one user said, “but that’s how we’ve ALL said it.”

The original alphabet song, entitled “The A.B.C.,” was first copyrighted in 1835 by music publisher Charles Bradlee. Given the low literacy rate at that time, having an easy, unwritten way to remember the alphabet was important — and song and rhymes are very easy for young children to memorize.

Considering how long it’s been around, it’s no wonder the tune is so near and dears to our hearts.

But perhaps, after 186 years, the alphabet song could use a little rejuvenation!
