8 Business Owners Who Received The Singapore National Day Award In 2021

Singapore National Day Awards
Singapore National Day Awards

The National Day Awards recognise various forms of individual merit and service to Singapore. Both Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans can be honoured for their contributions to the civil or military service, social and community work, or for excellent performance in their respective field.

First established in 1962, with five awards. Today, many more awards have been added to the list. For the National Day Awards in 2021, a total of 5,710 individuals received awards from 21 award categories. Notably, there were no awards for the top two categories – The Star of Temasek (Bintang Temasek) and The Order of Temasek (Darjah Utama Temasek) – and that about half of the award winners won “The Long Service Medal” award.

According to news reports, the National Day Awards have stringent criteria and an elaborate system of nomination and short-listing award winners. Ministries, statutory boards and grassroots organisations put forward their nominations, with the entire process usually taking four to five months, which includes time for consideration and approval by the President of Singapore.

The criteria of the awards differ from medal to medal (yes, the winners receive an actual medal). Some of the awards are also only for those in the military service. The recipients are also awarded titles that can be used professionally – such as on their name cards or biographies following their names.

We look at business owners who received awards within the top 6 categories of 2021 awards. (Editor’s Note: Do note that there may be more business owners that we could not verify as such. The information provided on the Prime Minister’s Office website typically states the individual’s public designations rather than personal/business designations.)
