7 things to know about Ikea's PLATSA range

From House Beautiful

Ikea’s PLATSA range is a highly flexible, modular storage system that you never knew you needed...until now.

House Beautiful UK were invited to the Ikea Supplier Days in Almhult, Sweden (which is basically at the heart of all things Ikea) to find out more about this innovative new range from the suppliers, external experts and the Ikea team themselves.

1. It utilises the 'click and snap' system

PLATSA is built using the wedge dowel system and if you haven't already heard about it, this click technique changes everything. The wedge dowel is an idea that was developed in the Prototype Shop and tested as early as 2014. The concept launched with the wooden Lisabo table, which went on sale in 2017.

This new type of joint means it drastically reduces the time taken to assemble and disassemble Ikea furniture, and all you have to use is your hands – that's right, no tools or glue is required. 'If you assembly yourself you can do it in one fifth of the time compared to another system,' says Henrik Elm, purchasing and logistics manager at Ikea Range and Supply.

2. You can take it with you wherever you want

PLATSA is a storage system that can follow you on all the roads of life. Moving home? It’s never been easier to transport your furniture. It's perfect if you’re renting but it’s also great for any living space if you simply want to move the storage unit into another room, whether that's the bedroom, living room or hallway. It's never been easier to disassemble and reassemble. 'It can be taken apart and reassembled many times without becoming unstable,' says Luca Corazza from Friul Intagli Industries, supplier of PLATSA. 'Up to 99 times,' to be precise.

3. It's different from PAX

PAX wardrobes are all about matching your style and interior settings, but PLATSA boasts flexibility and easy assembly. 'PLATSA is the flexible, modular multipurpose system,' explains Susanne Waidzunas, global purchasing & logistics area manager at Ikea Supply AG. 'It's very simple, it's very basic, with no jewellery inserts or trays. It's exactly what you need when you need it so that it really lasts over time.

'PAX is quite different – it's very static, it sits where you put it and it's not so flexible. On the other hand, PAX has a big advantage on the inside where you can do extras with interior fittings.'

4. It's a reflection of the way we live today

Urbanisation has inspired the PLATSA range – but conversation around this modular piece of furniture started three years ago. More people live in less space and move more frequently; homes are smaller than they have ever been; and there are more people renting now than ever before – London alone is set to be a city of renters by 2025, with only 40 per cent owning their own home. The range is a direct response to small and smart space living. ‘PLATSA is one of the most important families we’ve launched in recent years,' says Henrik.

5. You can customise it to suit your space

PLATSA allows for a very personalised solution in your home. You can customise the frames into whatever height and width you want, you can add, take away or move parts around, and you can even choose different interiors, legs and handles to suit your needs. For example, the external LÄTTHET clothes rail (as pictured below) is perfect for unused space between frames or between a frame and a wall.

6. It's cost effective

Think about it, if you take your units with you from room to room or whenever you move, you're saving a lot of money in the long run because you won't have to buy new storage or wardrobe systems. And remember, you can always add to it when needed.

7. This is just the beginning

'There's more to do,' says Susanne. 'The PLATSA in stores is the foundation, it's the base and the backbone that we will carry on with for quite a while but there are more interesting things in the pipeline – more display, incorporating sleep in different ways, moving a bit into architecture – so there are interesting times ahead with PLATSA.'
