“Frugal drivers employ an arsenal of tactics to reduce their transportation costs dramatically,” said Chris Yang, personal finance consultant and co-founder of Coins Value. Here are some of the top ways frugal people save money when they drive.

Use Apps To Find the Best Gas Prices

“Frugal drivers always use apps like GasBuddy or Waze to locate the cheapest gas prices in their area,” said Shawn Miller, senior writer at Modified Rides.

These apps provide real-time updates on gas prices, helping drivers save a significant amount of fuel over time. “By planning their fuel stops, drivers can avoid paying premium prices at convenient but expensive gas stations,” Miller explained.

Paul Schneider, insurance expert and president of Schneider & Associates Insurance Agencies, agreed. “Use a gas app and buy discount gift cards to save at least 10 cents per gallon. I have clients who save up to $500 a year with this strategy. Compare rates along your usual route and see how costs add up.”

Carpool and Ride-Share

“Sharing rides with colleagues, and friends, or through carpooling apps like BlaBlaCar helps frugal drivers save on fuel and reduce wear and tear on their vehicles,” Miller explained.

Not only does this split the cost of gas, he explained, but it also cuts down on the number of miles driven, leading to fewer maintenance needs and extending the car’s lifespan.

Schneider elaborated, “Carpool just once a week. Sharing the ride cuts your costs in half and reduces wear and tear. My friend saves $80 a month carpooling with a coworker. Little changes make a big difference.”

He also recommended offering friends a ride when going the same way. “Splitting gas or taking turns driving saves for everyone. Two of my clients share a once-a-week commute and save $40 a month each. Community support pays off.”

Use Cruise Control

On long highway drives, frugal drivers often use cruise control to maintain a constant speed, which improves fuel efficiency.

“According to the U.S. Department of Energy, using cruise control can save drivers an average of 7-14% on gas,” said Miller. “This simple habit reduces unnecessary acceleration and braking, leading to smoother and more economical driving.”

Other experts agreed. “Turn on cruise control, especially on highways,” said Schneider. “It improves gas mileage up to 14% at high speeds. I tell clients to make it a habit and watch your MPG increase over time.”

Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Frugal drivers understand the importance of regular maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations and air filter replacements.

“Keeping a car in good condition ensures it runs efficiently, preventing costly repairs and improving fuel economy,” Miller explained. “For instance, keeping tires properly inflated can improve gas mileage by up to 3%.”

Schneider noted the same. “Do regular maintenance. A well-tuned vehicle operates efficiently and lasts longer.”

He added that neglecting basic upkeep costs you far more in the end. “Following the owner’s manual schedule is the wisest financial choice a driver can make.”

Yang also weighed in, noting this was crucial for people to consider. “Another critical point is the importance of regular vehicle maintenance. Frugal drivers never skip oil changes or tune-ups, understanding that preventive care can save thousands in costly repairs down the road.”

Lighten Their Loads

Removing unnecessary items from the car reduces weight and improves fuel efficiency.

“Frugal drivers make it a habit to clear out their trunks and back seats of any heavy or unused items, as every additional 100 pounds can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 2%,” said Miller.

Using Fuel Rewards Programs

Many gas stations offer reward programs that give discounts or cash back on fuel purchases. “Frugal drivers sign up for these programs and use them consistently to save on every fill-up,” Miller explained.

Additionally, he noted that some credit cards offer rewards or cash back on gas purchases, providing another layer of savings.

The Bottom Line

“Incorporating these habits into daily driving routines can lead to substantial savings over time. Frugal drivers are always looking for ways to minimize expenses and maximize the efficiency of their vehicles,” said Miller.

Yang agreed, noting these tactics have saved him money in the long run.

“In my early career, I naively ignored these strategies, burning through cash on unnecessary fuel costs. Once I implemented these tactics, I slashed my monthly transportation expenses by over 30%,” he said. “This personal experience has become a powerful teaching tool for my clients, demonstrating the substantial impact of mindful driving habits on one’s financial health.”
