If you haven’t been paying attention to the car market lately, you may be surprised by some things that are happening. In fact, some parts of the market look like a total switch from previous years.

“In America, when compact cars are posting big increases and many SUV models are down, you have to wonder if we’re living in the upside down,” Car and Driver noted in a July 15 roundup of the 25 bestselling cars, trucks and SUVs so far in 2024.

Further, sales of new cars are finally getting back to more normal levels after years of issues with supply chains. And if you’re going to be car shopping, prices are still on the higher side, but inventories are closer to normal levels.

With 2024 half over, here’s a look at the five vehicles topping Car and Driver’s list of the bestselling cars, trucks and SUVs so far this year and how much you might pay to own them.

Ford F-Series

If you’ve followed the bestselling lists from Car and Driver in past years, you know that Ford’s lineup of pickups is always in the top spot. That’s the case for the first half of 2024, where the Ford F-Series is the top seller with more than 352,000 units sold. There was some bad news, though — sales for the Ford pickups were down about 8% through the first half of the year.

When it comes to price, you can get the 2024 Ford F-150 starting around $39,000. Keep in mind that unlike some rivals, Ford doesn’t offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Chevrolet Silverado

Coming in second is the Chevrolet Silverado. About 276,000 units have been sold — with sales of the light-duty and heavy-duty versions both up through the first half of the year.

The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will set you back about $39,000. Don’t expect stellar fuel efficiency — the optional diesel has EPA estimates of up to 33 mpg, and the four-wheel drive is maybe 26 mpg, according to Car and Driver’s review of the 2025 model.

Toyota RAV4

Up next on the list is the bestselling non-truck. About 248,000 units of the Toyota RAV4 have sold so far in 2024.

A new model will cost you about $35,000.

“Maintenance and repair costs for a Toyota RAV4 will amount to $1,503 after five years,” according to CarEdge. That includes scheduled maintenance, expected repairs and normal wear and tear, but it doesn’t include any free warranty work.

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y comes in fourth, with an estimated 209,000 units sold. It’s an estimate because Tesla doesn’t report sales numbers in the same way as other automakers.

You can get the 2024 Tesla Model Y starting around $45,000. CarEdge said maintenance and repairs costs for a Tesla Model Y will set you back about $4,700 during its first 10 years of service — less than half of the industry average for luxury SUVs.

Honda CR-V

Sales of the Honda CR-V have been good so far this year. More than 196,000 units have been sold.

The starting price for the 2025 CR-V is about $31,000. You’ll find pretty competitive fuel economy with this one. “The front-wheel-drive CR-V with the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gets EPA estimates of 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway,” although all-wheel drive drops those numbers a bit, Car and Driver reported in its review of the 2025 model.
