4 Ways To Eat Quality Durians On A Budget

This year's durian season is a huge one, with increased supplies from Malaysia and a falling Ringgit making Singapore durian lovers a happy bunch.

According to Channel NewsAsia, prices for the most popular durian Mao Shan Wang is at the lowest ever for this year at about $15 per kg. Now having quality durians is definitely not a cheap affair, especially since it's just a fruit. It's not something many of you indulge in every other day, so it's not so bad to enjoy that once in awhile.

Having a meal of durian can easily cost up to $50, but there are definitely ways to have your durian and eat it too without burning a hole in your pocket.

To help you GET more for your money, GET.com has 4 great suggestions to getting your durian fix without paying a shocker bill.

1. Durian Feast In Johor

Since most of Singapore's durian hail from our neighbour in Johor Bahru, isn't it best to cut out the middle man and enjoy the luxurious fruit at its roots? What's more, organising such a trip out with family and friends can be a good way to bond over the weekend too!

There are numerous tour operators that provide such a trip, such as Green Holidays. If you drive, you can also make a trip to Taman Sentosa for a night of seafood and have durians for desserts at a few of the mobile durian stalls there.

2. Durian Buffets In Singapore

If you are one of those who can stomach more than 3 durians on your own, perhaps going to a durian buffet will be worth your money.

There are a number of durian buffets around Singapore, such as the one at Agrobazaar Malaysia at Beach Road. The company is a promotion hub for Malaysian grown and produced goods, and is now running a $50 durian buffet for 2.

You can also check out Big Box's Durian Buffet which will be held from 7 – 8 August 2015 during the Jubilee weekend. Meet your friends at Big Box L1 HyperMart to feast on durians from Malaysia. Price starts from $26 per pax for members or $36 for non-members.

3. Join A Durian Party

Eating durians alone is no fun at all, so why not make it a party? There are a couple of established 'durian parties' going on every year, so make sure to look out for them to join in the fun.

Some of these are organised by the Resident's committee in the different areas.

4. Eat Durian In All Its Glorious Form

You don't really need to wait for the season to enjoy durian. If you are not too particular, there is always durian pulp used in preparing different delicacy.

For example, the Mid-autumn festival is coming soon and we've already started seeing advertisements for Mao Shan Wang Durian mooncakes!

Go to the Takashimaya atrium for its annual mooncake fair to have some free tasting and sampling! There are also established pastry sellers that make durian desserts a mainstay in their menu.

Try out Emicakes' best-selling durian crepes, Four Seasons' durian puffs and Baba and Nyonya's durian Kueh Lapis. These offer a cheaper way to have a taste of your favourite bitter-sweet fruit without an overkill in your appetite as well.
